1985 Imperial Banjo - made by the late Ty Piper in Blanchard, OK.
This is a great sounding and playing, pro quality instrument!
It has features that many bluegrass players are looking for, including a slim and fast mahogany neck, double bound resonator, one-piece flange, 3-ply maple rim and flathead tone ring. The rim, flange and tone ring design are very unique, and are somewhat similar to the patented Stelling wedge-fit pot assembly.
It also has a Kershner tailpiece, Schaller tuners, dual leg armrest, Remo head, bound ebony fretboard with MOP inlay, 1-1/4" nut width, 26 1/4" scale, and dual coordinator rods. There are 5th string capo spikes installed at 7, 9 and 10. Frets 1 thru 4 have been replaced, and have many hours of playing life left.
The finish is a high gloss, dark mahogany red. The binding has aged nicely, and has that vintage look.
Tone wise, this one (to my ears) has the power and crack of a Stelling, while maintaining a great bottom end (bass), with an excellent mid-range. Many of Ty's offerings featured a very heavy, solid tone ring, a solid tube and flat plate flange, along with a thick, heavy block rim. Having played a few, I much prefer the tone and lighter weight of this banjo over any of the super heavy tube and plate models.
The hard case is most likely original to the banjo, and could use a new handle.
