    Re: Well, I did it...

Nice! I saw that the other day and was pretty tempted, if only because Frank Proffit is one my favorites.

Remember Tobin, there was a time when fret less were the ONLY choice. They got along just...

    Re: Chrome Plating

Your Deering Sierra would be nickel plated.

Cleaning your banjo everyday is not necessary either way though, just my opinion. Clean it when its dirty if you want, i dont even do that, but theres...
  4. Re: What makes a removable resonator less ideal than a flange des

just various vintage tenor banjos from the 20s ~ but I see them on 5 strings as well. I don't know of any current maker still offering them other than the Deering Hartford.

    some examples below

  5. Re: What makes a removable resonator less ideal than a flange des

Right there's also the ones Tobin mentions with the removable bracket type flanges. But these that I'm talking about are basically just open back banjos with a resonator affixed.
  6. Re: What makes a removable resonator less ideal than a flange des

Thank you Jim that's a lot of good info! All makes sense to me now

Ivan, like I said they're not very popular, but they apparently used to be. I see them a lot on vintage banjos from the 20s and...
  7. What makes a removable resonator less ideal than a flange design

I've been playing banjo a little while now, but banjo construction and design eludes me. I've noticed that there are banjos with removable resonators, but they are not very popular especially with...

Re: Fiberskyn head and string choice

I suppose you're playing clawhammer? I've got a fiberskyn head, I haven't tried everything, but once I settled on nickel wound medium strings, I started buying Martin vega mediums in bulk from...
  9. Re: Your favorite OT/trad tunes for Sawmill tuning?

June Apple works good that way too.

    Re: Moon Bridges

I think you should consider a compensated bridge from Bart Veerman. Not only does he have really cool bridges (the untopped mystery wood is great for old time clawhammer) he also makes custom...

    Re: First time

I think the recording King dirty 30s is a really good value. Cheaper than the good time, but better quality than the Oscar Schmidt. When someone asks for a good budget banjo I point them that way.

  12. Re: What Irish Traditional Banjo Player(s) have influenced you?

If you haven't checked out Angelina Carberry you need to! Her album with Martin Quinn is what made me want to play tenor. A raucous rolling album if I ever heard one :P

Re: Where are the banjo pluckin' ladies?

tasteless? It's just women with banjos in a calendar. They're not wearing revealing clothes or anything. They're wearing sundresses for the most part not bikinis

Mary Z Cox is in it for Pete's...

    Re: Electronic tuners

Ah you're right. It is a slightly more yellow color. Still different from my other tuners.

no gripe here, but I just expected the tuner part to be the same as the others. I still really like it...
  15. Re: Has the cafe had its first NBD post yet?

Its an ot25. There's another Madison open back that doesn't have the scoop and has a frosted remo head as opposed to the fiberskyn on this model. I picked this one mainly because of the scoop, even...

    Re: Electronic tuners

Yeah it's weird that's all my other ones work, but this one turns green a full 3 bars to either side of the note. So I guess it's just mine, because the way you're describing yours sounds how it...

  18. Re: Your favorite OT/trad tunes for Sawmill tuning?

You could say that about the banjo in general :P

    Re: Year of the banjo

Saw Keith Urban playing slide on an electric git-Jo on the CMAs the other night so maybe you're right!

though I think Mumford and sons already really bumped up the popularity of banjos

    Re: Electronic tuners

Yes it's good for people like me who have bum eyes too. On the headstock it looks like it's a mile away.

snark also makes an adapter for their tuners to clip on the brackets. I just think the...
